After being involved with training projects over the last
30 plus years we have had the opportunity to be involved
with numerous managers asking a collage of training related
questions. It has always been MST’s position to listen to
the potential client and provide possible action items that
could deliver solutions at no initial cost. It is our
responsibility to inform the client on all available options
that might produce the outcomes requested. Those solutions
might or might not include the services of MST. This process
is not only important for the client; it is also a must for
MST. If the project will not lend itself to objective
outcomes and deliverables we have found that it is best for
the client to pursue other options that might be better
suited to their operation.
Topics that are usually discussed in an initial
consultation meeting may include:
- Business goals and how training
can help to accomplish these goals
- Current state of training
- Training program objectives
- Current methods of determining
training needs
- Current methods of assessing
employee skills and knowledge
- Current training materials that
are being used
- Skills of client’s training
staff and instructors
- Opportunities to leverage
online training and testing
- Linking training to
pay-for-skill initiatives
- Ensuring accountability and
validity in training and testing processes
- Expectations of what will be
accomplished through training
- Eligibility and availability of
training grants
The initial consultation might involve a brief
questionnaire (click
here to see a sample copy of a questionnaire) to
identify some critical information relating to the potential
clients philosophy and approach concerning training topics
and processes. It is probable that the answers provided
through the questionnaire will be sufficient for MST to
provide a course of action to target those items identified
as being important to the clients operation.
Most of the time the clients project can be documented
with the use of a flow chart or other comprehensive visual
tools to aid in tracking and providing an instrument to
implement quality control of the overall project.
